On the occasion of International Museum Day, observed annually on May 18, Visit Qatar highlights the central role museums play in supporting Qatar’s tourism development strategy and enhancing its cultural offering.

Museums across the State of Qatar serve as a cornerstone in preserving and celebrating the nation’s rich cultural heritage. They play a key role in positioning Qatar as a destination that offers diverse, authentic and high-quality experiences for visitors year-round, reinforcing its appeal across priority markets.

Qatar is home to a portfolio of world-class museums that offer visitors an engaging journey through history, art and culture, contributing to the country’s broader value proposition as a cultural and leisure destination.

The National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ)

At the forefront stands the National Museum of Qatar, an architectural landmark designed by French architect Jean Nouvel and inspired by the natural formation of the desert rose. The museum presents an immersive narrative of Qatar’s story, from the geological formation of the peninsula and traditional ways of life to the country’s modern transformation and future outlook.

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA)

Located on Doha’s waterfront, the Museum of Islamic Art designed by the renowned Chinese American architect I. M. Pei, is recognised as one of the most significant cultural institutions in the region. It houses an extensive collection of Islamic art from the 7th to the 20th centuries, reflecting the depth and diversity of Islamic civilisation.

The 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum

Extending beyond traditional museum themes, the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum reflects Qatar’s strong sporting culture and global engagement in sport. A member of Qatar Museums and the Olympic Museum Network, it serves as a national and international centre for sports history, heritage and knowledge, while promoting research and education in the field.

Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art

Situated in Education City, Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art is part of Qatar Museums and co-founded in collaboration with Qatar Foundation. Established in 2010, it houses one of the world’s largest specialised collections of modern and contemporary Arab art, with over 9,000 works.

Msheireb Museums

Located in Msheireb Downtown Doha, Msheireb Museums comprise four restored heritage houses—Bin Jelmood House, Company House, Mohammed Bin Jassim House and Radwani House—situated in the oldest part of the capital. Through carefully curated exhibitions, the museums explore key themes including traditional family life, the evolution of Qatari society, the history of the oil industry, and the country’s urban transformation.

Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum

Located in Al Samriya, west of Doha, the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum is one of the world’s largest private museums, housing over 30,000 artefacts from across four continents. It presents a wide-ranging collection spanning Islamic art, Qatari heritage, vintage vehicles and rare objects.

Visit Qatar affirms that these institutions are not only key cultural landmarks, but also drivers of cultural tourism that contribute to deeper visitor engagement and more enriching travel experiences. In line with its strategic mandate to promote and develop tourism, Visit Qatar continues to highlight these cultural assets through its international campaigns, supporting its vision to position Qatar as a leading destination offering diverse, authentic and high-quality experiences year-round.
