OpenAI’s ChatGPT has surpassed 1 billion global monthly active users, marking a major milestone and becoming the fastest application in history to reach this level, according to estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, as reported by Reuters.
The achievement highlights the rapid global adoption of artificial intelligence tools, with ChatGPT reaching the milestone in May—approximately three years after its initial launch. This pace outstrips other widely used platforms, including Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, which took longer to reach similar user scale, Sensor Tower data indicated.
The milestone also underscores the intensifying competition in the AI sector, particularly between OpenAI and rivals such as Anthropic, as companies race to expand capabilities and capture a larger share of the fast-growing generative AI market.
Industry observers note that ChatGPT’s accelerated user growth reflects both increasing mainstream integration of AI tools into daily workflows and rising demand for conversational AI across consumer and enterprise use cases.
