Red Sea Museum Highlights Centuries of Islamic Maritime Heritage

Located in the heart of Historic Jeddah, the Red Sea Museum offers visitors a fascinating journey through centuries of Islamic maritime heritage, showcasing an exceptional collection of navigational instruments that illustrate the scientific achievements, craftsmanship, and cultural traditions that shaped seafaring across the Red Sea and the wider Islamic world.

The museum houses more than 20 rare historical navigation tools, including Qibla indicators, magnetic compasses, and sundials, with some artifacts dating back more than 400 years. These meticulously crafted instruments demonstrate the advanced knowledge of astronomy, geography, and navigation possessed by Muslim scholars and craftsmen, while reflecting the practical needs of sailors, merchants, and pilgrims who relied on them during long sea voyages.

Many of the artifacts are adorned with intricate inscriptions featuring Quranic verses, the call to prayer (adhan), and traditional supplications, highlighting the close relationship between scientific innovation and Islamic cultural heritage. These decorative and functional elements underscore the spiritual significance of navigation, particularly for travelers seeking to determine the direction of Makkah and observe prayer times while at sea.

Among the museum’s most notable exhibits are Qibla indicators and magnetic compasses designed to accurately identify the direction of the Holy Kaaba, as well as sundials used to calculate daily prayer times by tracking the movement of the sun. Together, these instruments illustrate the ingenuity of Islamic civilization in developing practical solutions that combined faith with scientific precision.

Beyond preserving these remarkable artifacts, the Red Sea Museum highlights the historical importance of the Red Sea as one of the world’s most significant maritime trade and pilgrimage routes, connecting the Arabian Peninsula with Africa, Asia, and beyond. Through its carefully curated exhibitions, the museum enriches visitors’ understanding of Islamic maritime history while supporting broader efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of Historic Jeddah and strengthen its position as a leading global cultural and tourism destination.
