
Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, visited Madrid on May 13, 2026, where he met with Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares Bueno.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and elevate them to a strategic partnership, building on longstanding historical ties and friendly relations between the leadership and peoples of both countries. The visit concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the Saudi-Spanish Strategic Partnership Council.
The two ministers expressed satisfaction with the progress of bilateral relations and welcomed advances in cooperation across key areas of mutual interest, including security, defense, trade, investment, culture, and multilateral engagement. They reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the strategic partnership and exploring future opportunities it presents. The visit also resulted in the signing of an Agreement on Mutual Visa Exemption for holders of diplomatic, special, and service passports.
Both sides exchanged views on regional and international developments, voicing concern over rising tensions in the region. They stressed the importance of adherence to international law and the need to consolidate ceasefires in Gaza, Iran, and Lebanon, while prioritizing dialogue and diplomatic solutions to enhance regional and international security and stability. They also called for restraint and prudence and emphasized the importance of ensuring the security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Spanish side reaffirmed Spain’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia, GCC countries, and Jordan in the face of recent attacks, and praised Saudi Arabia’s balanced approach and continued efforts toward de-escalation and diplomacy.
The Saudi side, in turn, commended Spain’s stance on de-escalation in the Middle East, its condemnation of regional aggressions, and its position on the Palestinian issue, including support for a two-state solution.
