DOHA: The Amiri Diwan of the State of Qatar today announced the passing of His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani at the age of 74. The announcement was made in an official statement issued on Sunday morning.
In its statement, the Amiri Diwan expressed condolences, saying: “May Allah have mercy on his soul and grant him the best reward for what he achieved for his homeland and nation.”
Sheikh Hamad served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 until 2013, before voluntarily transferring power to his son, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a historic and peaceful succession that was widely regarded as unprecedented in the Gulf region.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements or official mourning have not yet been announced by the Amiri Diwan.
