Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has officially launched the main tunnelling works for the Dubai Metro Blue Line, a major infrastructure project valued at more than AED 20.5 billion.
Spanning 30 kilometres, the route includes 15.5 km underground and 14.5 km above ground, with a total of 14 stations—three interchange hubs, seven elevated stations, and four underground stations. The line is set to serve nine key districts, supporting a projected population of around one million residents under the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. During the visit, His Highness also reviewed the interior designs of upcoming stations and received a progress update.
He emphasized that investment in transport infrastructure is a strategic investment in the future and a cornerstone of Dubai’s global competitiveness. The Blue Line, he noted, reflects a broader vision to build a more connected, efficient, and sustainable city.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several senior leaders, including Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, and Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The tunnelling works were launched from the largest underground interchange station in the network at International City 1, spanning over 44,000 square metres. The project highlights Dubai’s commitment to smart mobility, improved quality of life, and seamless urban connectivity.
Currently 20% complete, the project has mobilized more than 10,000 workers and over 500 engineers and experts. Construction progress has exceeded planned targets, with more than 13 million work hours completed without lost-time injuries. Key developments include ongoing station construction, bridge works, and the start of a 1.3 km metro bridge crossing Dubai Creek—the first of its kind.
A major milestone was the activation of the tunnel boring machine “Al Wugeisha,” a 163-metre-long, 2,000-tonne machine capable of excavating up to 17 metres per day. Equipped with advanced digital guidance and monitoring systems, it will drive tunnelling operations in three directions from International City 1.
The Blue Line is scheduled to reach 30% completion by the end of 2026 and is expected to open on September 9, 2029. Once operational, it will connect with the Red and Green Lines, reduce traffic congestion by 20%, and provide direct access to Dubai International Airport within 20 minutes.
The project also introduces the iconic Emaar Properties Station, set to become the world’s tallest metro station at 74 metres. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the station combines innovative design with functionality, symbolizing Dubai’s forward-looking vision.
Overall, the Dubai Metro Blue Line represents a significant step in advancing the emirate’s infrastructure, supporting economic growth, and enhancing its position as a global hub for innovation and connectivity.
