The 2026 Saudi Pro League Crisis: Ronaldo’s Rebellion and Benzema’s “Royal” Arrival

in Sports, News

As of February 7, 2026, the Saudi Pro League (SPL) is facing its most significant institutional challenge since its global expansion began. The narrative is no longer just about world-class goals; it is a high-stakes struggle between global icons, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), and the delicate balance of competitive power in the Kingdom.

1. Karim Benzema’s Dream Debut at Al Hilal

The winter transfer window closed on February 2, 2026, with the headline-grabbing move of Karim Benzema from Al Ittihad to league leaders Al Hilal.

  • The “Real Madrid of Asia”: Benzema wasted no time justifying his move, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist in a crushing 6-0 victory over Al Okhdood on February 5.
  • A New Power Dynamic: Benzema described Al Hilal as the “Real Madrid of Asia,” highlighting the club’s winning mentality and infrastructure. His arrival has solidified Al Hilal’s position at the top of the table with 50 points after 20 matches.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo’s “Silent Strike” Against the PIF

While Benzema celebrates, Cristiano Ronaldo is in open revolt. The Portuguese legend has entered a state of protest, missing Al Nassr’s recent fixtures, including a pivotal 2-0 win over Al Ittihad on February 6.

  • The Grievance: Ronaldo is reportedly “furious” with the PIF over a perceived lack of investment in Al Nassr compared to Al Hilal. While Al Hilal secured stars like Benzema and Darwin Núñez, Al Nassr’s winter activity was largely stagnant.
  • The Warning: In an unprecedented move, the SPL issued a stern statement on February 5, declaring that “no individual stands above the club,” reminding Ronaldo that PIF’s strategic allocations are not subject to personal demands.
  • June 2026 Exit? Rumors are intensifying that Ronaldo may activate a summer release clause to leave Saudi Arabia by June 2026, with a return to Sporting CP or a move to MLS being discussed as potential escape routes.

3. PIF and the SPL Governance Crisis

The PIF, which holds a 75% stake in the “Big Four” clubs, is under fire for the widening gap in competitive balance.

  • Concentration of Power: Analysts warn that the concentration of elite talent in Al Hilal (currently unbeaten this season) threatens the league’s commercial appeal and international “soft power” goals.

Privatization Acceleration: To mitigate these tensions, the Saudi government is accelerating plans for club privatization, starting with Al Hilal, to move toward a more sustainable and less state-dependent financial model.
