US Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism about the possibility of a renewed chapter in relations between Washington and Tehran as high-level talks between the United States and Iran commenced in Switzerland on Sunday.
Speaking at the start of the discussions, Vance described the meeting as “historic,” highlighting the significance of the direct engagement between senior US and Iranian officials. The talks are being held at a resort in Burgenstock, Switzerland, and mark one of the highest-level face-to-face exchanges between the two countries in recent years.
“This is a historic meeting,” Vance said, underscoring the importance of the dialogue amid longstanding tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Vance noted that US President Donald Trump has called for turning over “a new leaf” in relations with Iran, signaling a desire to move beyond years of strained ties and explore opportunities for a more constructive relationship. He said the discussions reflect the administration’s willingness to engage diplomatically in pursuit of solutions to outstanding issues between the two nations.
According to Vance, the technical-level negotiations taking place in Switzerland will provide representatives from both sides with an opportunity to sit together, address areas of disagreement, and work toward resolving key challenges. He emphasized that the talks are intended to create a framework for continued dialogue and potentially lay the groundwork for a broader improvement in bilateral relations.
The Switzerland meeting is being closely watched by the international community, with observers viewing it as a potentially significant step toward easing tensions and opening new channels of communication between the United States and Iran.
