The global aviation sector is preparing for a major increase in passenger demand, with the industry expected to handle twice the number of travellers within a generation without a corresponding expansion in airports, aircraft fleets or border processing resources.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global passenger numbers are projected to reach 8 billion annually within the next 20 to 25 years, rising further towards 10 billion by 2050.
SITA’s Impact Report 2025 highlights how technology and digital solutions are becoming central to expanding aviation capacity, improving operational resilience and reducing the sector’s environmental impact. Based on collaboration with airlines, airports, governments and travel partners worldwide, the report examines how innovation is reshaping the future of air travel.
David Lavorel, CEO of SITA, said the industry faces the challenge of moving significantly more passengers without simply expanding physical infrastructure. He noted that airports are increasingly using technology to increase capacity within existing facilities, while governments are adopting digital solutions to streamline border processes before passengers reach traditional checkpoints.
Lavorel added that artificial intelligence is moving beyond experimental projects and becoming integrated into daily aviation operations, helping improve decision-making and efficiency. He emphasised that the transformation is the result of collective efforts across airlines, airports, governments and technology partners working together to build the next generation of air transport.
