Under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has launched Abu Dhabi’s first dedicated licence plates for trial and commercial autonomous vehicles, reinforcing the emirate’s commitment to advancing smart mobility.
The initiative is designed to regulate the operation of autonomous vehicles across the emirate by introducing specialised licence plates that clearly distinguish vehicles participating in testing and pilot programmes from those providing commercial autonomous transport services.
The new licence plates are divided into two categories. Vehicles delivering commercial autonomous services will carry plates marked “Auto Drive”, while those involved in testing and pilot programmes will display “Test”. Both plate types feature a distinctive blue design, making autonomous vehicles easily identifiable on Abu Dhabi’s roads.
The dedicated plates will enable authorities to quickly identify different categories of autonomous vehicles, improving monitoring capabilities and supporting enhanced road safety.
In addition, the plates are linked to the emirate’s licensing and operational requirements for autonomous vehicles, ensuring operators comply with approved technical and operational standards. The measure is expected to strengthen sector oversight as the deployment of autonomous mobility solutions continues to expand.
The launch comes as Abu Dhabi accelerates the rollout of autonomous vehicle services through both commercial operations and testing programmes conducted by specialised technology companies.
Officials expect the initiative to further support the development of the emirate’s autonomous mobility ecosystem by enabling authorities to gather and analyse operational data, helping shape future policies and regulations while strengthening the regulatory framework as autonomous vehicle technologies mature.
The introduction of the dedicated licence plates reflects Abu Dhabi’s broader vision of building a future-ready transport network by creating a comprehensive regulatory and operational environment that supports the safe, efficient testing and deployment of autonomous vehicles.
