The U.S. economy added 169,000 jobs in August but the nation’s unemployment rate was little unchanged at 7.3 percent compared to 7.4 percent in July, according to a new report released by the Department of Labor Friday.
The report showed that both the number of unemployed persons, at 11.3 million, and the unemployment rate, at 7.3 percent, changed little in August. The jobless rate is down from 8.1 percent a year ago. In August, job growth occurred in retail trade and health care, while employment in information declined. Employment continued to trend up in food services and drinking places, professional and business services, and wholesale trade.
