World Green Economy Summit returns to Dubai for second year in April 2015

Al Tayer also highlighted some of the key WGES 2015 participants at the press conference, including; Kandeh K. Yumkella, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All and CEO of the Sustainable Energy and the Chairman of UN-Energy and a two-term former Director-General of the United (UNIDO), Arnold Schwarzenegger, Former Governor of California and Founder of R20, in addition to WGES top speakers, including CEOs, business executives, entrepreneurs, philanthropic figures and international leaders, who will come together to forge global green business partnerships and find viable solutions to the challenge of transitioning to a global green economy.

Al Tayer also highlighted that the WGES 2015 programme will focuson key developments that are needed to build a green economy, including: Developing input and insights that will be presented in a declaration in Paris at COP21, a major component of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Climate regulation, Leadership in climate change and engaging with youth as a major driver for change, Global green public-private partnerships, Global green marketplace, Innovation, finance, and new solutions Al Tayer concluded, “The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is proud to be one of the lead organizers for this growing platform that is playing an increasingly international role in effecting change in the global marketplace.” Commenting on the programme, Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President for Strategy & Business Development for DEWA , CEO of the Dubai Green Economy Partnership, said: “The 2015 Summit is firmly rooted in building upon the foundations of the inaugural Summit in April 2014. Since the first Summit we have been developing action plans around each declaration to ensure that World Green Economy Summit is synonymous with action and not just words.

“Our public private partnership platform at WGES 2015 will join governments and public authorities with corporate and financial institutions in order to showcase innovative solutions to perceived challenges in green development.In the build up to WGES 2015, The State of the Green Economy Report, published by WGES, supported by Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and DEWA , and managed and assured by Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence and United Nations Development Programme respectively, is also announced today.” “The objective of the report is to showcase Dubai’s green economy through the featuring of private companies, public entities, international best practices and the UN’s latest research and trends. Authored by recognised experts, the report will present a comprehensive overview and outlook on the progress and innovation on green economic development initiatives such as smart cities and living, lifestyle and consumer choices, tourism, and finance and investments,” added Mr. Salman.

Dr. Yousef Ibrahim Al Akraf, EVP – Human Resources &Business Support at DEWA , and Chairman of the Sales and Logistic Committee of the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2015) explored the great development that the Exhibition and the global events taking place in conjunction with it. “Last year, we hosted the first World Green Economy Summit (WGES 2014), which resulted in important outputs and recommendations, which were embedded into the Dubai Declaration that has become a guide for all stakeholders of Sustainable Development. This year we are hosting the second edition of the Summit, which has become a milestone not only in our march towards green economy but for the entire world as well.” “Both the Exhibition and the Summit integrate each other and draw wide attention from all the stakeholders, including both public and private sectors and individuals as they represent one roadmap and one of the most important paths for sustainable development, and to provide the peoples of the world with all their requirements of this development,” added Dr. Al Akraf.

Dr. Al Akraf concluded by inviting all stakeholders concerned with green economy and sustainable development to participate in these two high-profile global events to enrich them with all cutting-edge ideas, expertise and best practices that will contribute to achieving the shared aspirations towards green economy.

Andre Schneider, Chairman of World Climate Ltd, the Summit organizer, commented: “WGES 2015 will serve as a major platform for leading regional and international organizations, businesses and governments to connect and collaborate on building a more green and sustainable, and economically viable global economy. Dubai has always been at the nexus of trade and the movement of people and ideas, and this is why it is the ideal location for this Summit.” “With seven months to go until WGES 2015 commences, we will continue to update on confirmed speakers and partners,” concluded Mr. Schneider.

At the end of the Conference, Al Tayer and Waleed Salman unveiled the cover of The State of the Green Economy Report, and honored participants in this report: Pacific Controls, Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), Dubai Silicon Oasis, Shell, EnPark, Dubai FDI, First Solar, Toshiba, Cummins, ALEC.
