Seasonally adjusted government deficit down slightly to 2.5% of GDP in the euro area

In the second quarter of 2014, the seasonally adjusted1 general government deficit to GDP ratio stood at 2.5% in the euro area (EA18), a slight decrease compared with the first quarter of 2014. In the EU283, the deficit to GDP ratio also decreased slightly4 to 3.0% of GDP, according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

In the second quarter of 2014, total government revenue in the euro area amounted to 46.6% of GDP, compared with 47.6% in the first quarter of 2014. Total government expenditure in the euro area stood at 49.1% of GDP, down from 50.1% in the previous quarter, the report said.

In the second quarter of 2014, total government revenue in the EU28 was 45.1% of GDP, compared with 46.0% in the first quarter of 2014. Total government expenditure in the EU28 was 48.2% of GDP, down from 49.1% in the previous quarter.
